History of Tiji Festival

The word Tiji derived from the Tibetan language ‘Tenchi’ which means  ‘pray for the world peace’. Tiji festival is the major and the biggest festival of Lo-Manthang. Lo-Manthang is a late forbidden kingdom. It opened for the foreign visitors in 1992. It lies at an altitude of 3840m. Once there was a king Samdup Rabten in Lo-Manthang. During 17 century, he invited Sakya Trizin Ngawang Kunga in Lo-Manthang. At that time, he had stayed in Chhode Monastery. Chhode Monastery is the most ritual monastery of upper mustang. This Monastery lies besides Mustang Royal Palace. Chhode monastery is very famous for the performance of vajrakila  practice. Sakya Trizin Ngawang Kunga started rituals in front of Royal Mustang Palace for the well being of  Mustangi people and dispelling negative devil power. This rituals continued for 3 days which is now known as Tiji Festival. During this festival, the monks of Chhode Monastery performs religious dance(Tenpa Chirim) every year in May.
