Indian Food in Hippie Trail

The Indian Food Hippie Trail blog introduces you to the food cultures in Kathmandu. Freak Street was the hippie trail during the 1960s to 1970s because of the government-run hashish shop. Hippies from different parts of the world traveled to Kathmandu in search of natural cannabis. Still, Freak Street holds its charm for travelers. If you walk through the alleys and narrow roads, you will find several cafés, restaurants, and shops where you can taste local dishes and find Nepali souvenirs.

Today, I passed by Freak Street and saw a small local café where locals and foreigners enjoyed Indian food. The place is known as Janakpur Janaki Litti Bhandar. I became curious and went inside. The owners, originally from Janakpur, opened this place a year ago. Janakpur is located in the Eastern Terai of Nepal and is one of Nepal's historical and religious sites, known as the birthplace of the Hindu goddess Sita. The main focus of the Janakpur tour is the Janaki Mandir, one of the important Hindu pilgrimage sites.

Though the most famous food in Nepal is Bhaat and Tarkari, Nepali cuisine has a lot of Indian influence. Nepali food is usually less spicy than Indian food, but the Indian food you find in Nepal has intense flavors. The Indian influence was mostly confined to the southwestern part of Nepal, but now, in Kathmandu, there are many local cafés and restaurants where travelers can find cheap and tasty Indian food.

At Janakpur Janaki Litti Bhandar, you can find Samosa Chat, Pani Puri, Aloo Chop, Chickpeas, and more. The food is really delicious and very affordable. Many locals and foreigners have given positive feedback about the food, and the staff are very attentive to service.

Duke Nepal highly recommends you visit and enjoy cheap and delicious food at Freak Street.
