Best Things To Do In Rara Lake

Best Things To Do In Rara Lake

Although the lake is a major attraction, there are many activities to enjoy during the Rara Lake Tour.

Wildlife and Bird Watching

Rara Lake, being surrounded by Nepal's smallest national park, is home to unique wildlife and birds. You can find 51 species of mammals including musk deer, snow leopard, red panda, and blue sheep, as well as 214 species of birds like Danfe, Munal, Himalayan snow crow, and Kalij. Many of these species are rare and vulnerable, making this area a paradise for wildlife and bird lovers.

Camping and Campfire

Camping sites are available near the National Park and Lower Milichaur, where you can enjoy campfires for recreation until 10 p.m. Visitors are requested to avoid making loud noises after 10 o'clock, as per National Park rules.

Horse Riding

Horse riding is an excellent recreational option for visitors of all ages. You can hire horses from local people, with charges based on the duration. If you want to hire a horse driver, additional costs apply. Riding along the bank of Rara Lake offers magnificent views, and there are nearby horse riding trails to explore.

Cycling

Cycling around Rara Lake is also possible by renting a bicycle from the hotel at a rate of NPR 500 per hour. Cycling along the lakeshore, watching your shadow reflected in the water, provides a fantastic and memorable experience during your tour.

Hiking to Murma Top

Murma Top is the best viewpoint of Rara Lake, reachable within two hours by hiking from the lake. From Murma Top, you can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the entire lake, making it a perfect spot for photographers to capture unique angles of Rara.

Boating

Boating on the pristine, clear blue waters of Rara Lake is a spectacular experience that should not be missed. Two types of boats are available: wooden boats and rubber boats. You can also see different species of fish swimming in the lake. Boating is done only in the early morning due to strong afternoon winds. Since boats are limited and time is short, visitors often have to wait for their turn.

Thakur Baba's Temple

Located north of Rara Lake, Thakur Baba's Temple offers the first glimpse of the lake. According to local legend, the god Thakur Baba shot an arrow to open the passage of the lake, known as Khapyad Khola, which helps reduce flood damage.

Mountain Views

From Rara Lake, you can see Chankhelne Himal, which is featured on the Nepalese one-rupee note. The famous Chhayanath Temple, considered as significant as Pashupatinath Temple in western Nepal, lies on the foothills of this mountain. While traveling from Jumla to Rara, you can also see Patarashi Himal, Kamjirowa Himal, and many other smaller peaks.

View Tower and Chautari

There is a wooden view tower on the bank of Rara Lake, about a 15-minute walk from Danfe Hotel. Though not very tall, it offers a good view of the lake. Nearby, in Lower Milichaur, there is a small chautari where late King Mahendra Shah sat during his visit in 2020. A stone inscription at the chautari bears his words praising Rara’s beauty: “Sundarta ke bhandar sara, k khanaya yasai rara ke apshara.” It is also said that King Mahendra wrote a poem called "Feri Unakai Lagi."

Endemic Vegetation

Rara National Park boasts 1,074 species of flora, among which 16 species are endemic to Nepal. The trails from Talcha Airport to Rara Lake and from Upper Milichaur to the lake are rich with Dhupi, Salla, and Himalayan white rhododendron. The fresh, sweet scents of Dhupi and Salla enhance the hiking experience.
