Hence, the city grew because of the British Gurkha Recruitment Centre in 1953.  Hence, the Rais and Limbus are two ethnic groups which have a large inhabit in Dharan. Dharan  is one of the Metropolitan cities in eastern Nepal, in the Sunsari District, and it lies on the foothills of the Mahabharat Range in the north with its southern tip touching the edge of the Terai region at an altitude of 1148 ft (349m). It serves as a trading post between the hilly region and the plains of Terai region. It was once the location of a recruitment center for the Brigade of Gurkhas, opened in 1953. The recruitment center is closed and the campus is now the home of B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences since 1993. Dharan Sub-metropolitan city organized a Golden Jubilee celebration of Dharan from January 28 to January 31, 2011 marking the 50th year of establishment of the municipality. It is the second-largest city of Eastern Nepal. It is popular as the soccer/footballer producing factory of Nepal.

Furthermore, Bhedetar lies in the eastern hill of Dharan. Similarly, Dharan  is the main gateway to some remote tourist attractions such as Kumbhakarna Himal, Kanchenjunga, Makalu Barun National Park, Arun Valley, Tinjure-Milke (Rhododendron Protection Area), Gupha Lake, Hyatrung Fall, and Sabha Pokhari. Furthermore, these locations are rather remote and therefore requires long day trips.


Dharan is the gateway to some of the best touristic attractions and Dharan has many more to offer to everybody. Buddhasubba Temple, Dantakali Temple, Vijayapur Hill, Pindeshwor Temple and Panchakanya Temple in Dharan is best to fulfill spiritual needs of any individuals. Dharan too offer some sort of night life with the abundant number of pubs, disco and hotels operating at night. A short 20 minutes hike to Namche from Dharan is highly preferrable for both nature lovers and adventure seekers. Dharan is easily accessible via roadways. Dharan is 20 minutes drive from Itahari. Volvo buses from Kathmandu to Dharan leaves everybody at 3:30 PM and bus will reach morning of the following day.  Basically Dharan is easily accessible through roadway.

Detailed Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Arrival in Kathmandu and Transfer to Hotel
    On arrival at Kathmandu airport, you will be welcomed by Duke Nepal Adventure representative and promptly transferred to hotel.You can either take a break or hang around in the city premises depending on your interest and time constraint. In the evening, there will be a pre-trip discussion, and a concise introduction with your tour guide.
  • Day 2 : Kathmandu Full Day Sightseeing
    This full day sightseeing trip will combine various monuments, cultural and Heritage site within the valley- Boudhanath an Buddhist stupa, Pashupatinath an Hindu Temple, Patan durbar square, Swoyambunath, an Buddhist and Hindu Shrine, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Hanuman Dhoka Museum and Kumari (virgin) living goddess temple.
  • Day 3 : Flight from Kathmandu to Biratnagar & drive to Dharan (Sightseeing in Dharan)
    After breakfast our representatives will take you to the airport for your flight to Biratnagar. We will drive you from Biratnagar airport to Dharan (about one hour drive). After lunch at Dharan, you could see the famous Dantakali temple the Budha Subba temple. In the evening time, we could visit Raja Rani Lake and Yalambar park. Overnight stay at hotel in Dharan.
  • Day 4 : Drive to Dhankuta, en route visit Bhedetar and hike till Namche
    After breakfast we drive uphill of about 17 km and stop for a while at Bhedetar aka Sailung Danda, which is a cool and rejuvenating hill station. A few minutes’ drive from Bhedetar, Namche is recognized by CNN as one of the top ten places to Visit. A 20 minute walk uphill takes you to this picturesque village that offers a perfect break from the hustle and bustle of the town. After lunch in Bhedetar, we drive further towards Dhankuta, transfer to hotel and overnight stay at hotel
  • Day 5 : Exploring Dhankuta and nearby places
    After early breakfast, we drive you to Hile which is about 13 km north from Dhankuta. After this we drive you to Pakhribas which is yet another 5 km from Hile. Here we see the two temples, churches and a Buddhist monastery. Naangi Danda is also one of the best tourist spots in Pakhribas for excursion. Lunch at Pakhribas. We drive back to Dhankuta after the tour where we stay at the hotel overnight.
  • Day 6 : Drive from Dhankuta to Biratnagar (flight to Kathmandu)
    Today after breakfast we drive you to Biratnagar airport from where you will be flown to Kathmandu from where you will be transferred to your hotel. Farewell Dinner will be hosted by Duke Nepal Adventure with typical Nepali Cutural Program . Overnight stay at hotel in Kathmandu.
  • Day 7 : Departure
